Newsletter for the Week of January 14, 2013

Dear Family,

This week in spelling we will focus on: the vowel teams ee and ea. In phonics students will learn that ay and ai say a; igh says i. Our red words for the week are:

could, should, would, give, live

Math:

Students will continue to work on writing number words. They will be counting coins and reviewing even and odd numbers. Students will work on time to the hour.

Science:

We will continue to learn about penguins and their different habitats. Students will learn that penguins live all over the world below the equator! They will also learn that there are several different kinds of penguins ranging in size from 12 inches to 4 ½ feet tall!

Social Studies:

This month students will learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will read about M.L.K. and learn how important he has been to our world.

Reminders:

No school Jan. 21^st- MLK Holiday * Late Start Jan. 25^th

We will not send book bags home this week. Look for paper books in their folders.

Awesome Library Site at FES!

If you want information about AR books, AR quiz lists, AR book levels visit our library on line! Also, there are some great research resources that your children can have fun exploring or older children can use for research! There is the World Book Online (online encyclopedias) Culture Grams to learn about different countries and cultures, and my favorite is the Power Kids Life, Earth, and Space Science.

These are all sites our school subscribes to, and the passwords are available on line for you. See below with the other links and you can click to go directly to the library link in the top bar of Foothill Elementary School web site.

Meet our Teachers

Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Badella, and Mrs. Cunningham are a team of teachers that love to teach first grade! We work together to ensure that our students receive the best we can offer in both academics and social growth throughout the entire school year!

Although we have three separate classrooms, we truly feel that ALL of the students are OUR students. Your child will feel welcomed and loved by all of us. It is important that your child feels safe at school, as well as challenged and understand the high expectations to achieve his or her personal best! The three of us meet daily to discuss and share our curriculum and to work on strategies to improve our instruction in each of our classrooms.

First grade is an exciting year of growth for your child. We look forward to sharing this year with you and your child. Let's go and have a grrreeeeaaaat year!
